National Needs To "Grow Up"

Dear Sir

Eric Roy's column "Novopay mess due to Labour" (27 February) didn't impress me.

As a teacher I have heard all these excuses before:

"They started it"
"Can't remember"
"They told me to"
"They did it too"
"I can't tell you, it's a secret"

After four years, and a growing mess, isn't it about time this Government grew up and started taking responsibility!

Yours sincerely...

Hi, do you have a link, i have searched high and low but to no avail.

There is no link to Eric's column, I would have to transcribe it. Basically he is claiming that the contract Labour Minister, Chris Carter, signed off constricted what they could do. He ignores the fact that they still didn't have to implement it when they did and that there were other legal options they could have pursued.

In other words they were just plain lazy!

Better letter, Dave :-)

Pleased it rates on the pithy meter, Robert. :-)

I think "needs to" is a bad choice of words (and position). "I wish National would grow up", is more useful than "needs to". Needs to sounds a touch arrogant. "National are behaving childishly" or "The behaviour of the National MP's resembles that of a gaggle of spotty youths", betters "National must", which sounds a bit Mary Poppins-ish :-)

There is also the issue of the number of words one uses in a title. "I wish National would grow up" is too long. My arrogance is surely nothing compared to National's during Question Time at the moment!

Did it seriously take you three months to get a letter written in reply?
Dave Kennedy said…
Good point, Armchair, I have no idea how November got there! Now the have correct date.
Armchair Critic said…
No, that still doesn't work. Now your blog post is dated the day before Mr Roy's opinion piece. While the contents of the piece in the ST were quite predictable (National saying" it wasn't us, blame Labour" is all too regular an occurrence) it is implausible that you replied before Mr Roy's piece was published.

Armchair, I think the date is a problem with the way my blog operates, it's not in the same time zone.

It's probably set to a time zone in the U.S.
